How to interpret a sudden elevation in serum glucose level?

Product Description
An 83-year-old male patient of mine has no history of diabetes (during a random serum glucose test a year ago, his level was 111 mg/dL). He had been advised to consume a nutritional supplement (Ensure) three times a day, but after a day or two of poor oral intake his serum glucose level was 1,400 mg/dL and his glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) was 8%. How should these findings be interpreted? Does the patient have recent-onset diabetes mellitus?

Can onset of diabetes be delayed?

Product Description
Question: A 60-year-old female patient has a hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) level of 6% and a fasting plasma glucose level of 109 mg/dL (6.1 mmol/L). Her mother received a diagnosis of diabetes at age 75. Is it possible to delay the onset of overt diabetes in my patient with daily use of metformin hydrochloride or one of the glitazones? Also, if these drugs have a beneficial effect on blood lipid levels, why are they not used for that purpose?

Preparing patient for clinical tests for blood sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure ?

I wish to have clinical tests for assessing
(1) blood sugar and other effects of having diabetes for last one year
(2) whether I have high blood pressure
(3) whether my cholesterol level is normal
(4) eye test.

I can get these tests done without consulting a doctor. But I wish to know what all tests I should do and how should I prepare for these tests such as fasting blood sugar etc.

Thanks
