This is an excerpt from a letter by Richard Moore, MD, PhD dated August 31, 2009. The treatment of diabetes is based upon the idea that the main role of insulin in the body is to lower blood sugar (glucose) levels. Indeed, blood sugar levels rise in diabetes and thus sugar spills over into the urine. Hence the name diabetes mellitus or sweet urine. But the idea that insulins main action is to lower blood glucose turns out to be a historical accident. Basic research done between 1958 and 1963 clearly demonstrates that the main action of insulin is to stimulate the sodium-potassium pump and to reduce the acid inside the bodys cells. A study by Dr. Ken Zierler at Johns Hopkins and also others by my group clearly demonstrated this. Work done by a basic scientist at the University of Illinois also indicated that the high blood glucose in diabetes is not the cause of the pathology. Recently, other investigators at Johns Hopkins have shown that potassium deficiency can cause diabetes. Both Dr. Zierler, the scientist at the University of Illinois, and myself made repeated attempts to inform the American Diabetes Association about this, but in every case, they refused to listen to us. But the glucose dogma was (and is) so strong that almost everyone just knew that tighter control of blood glucose levels would solve the remaining problems to which diabetics are prone. I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes, so I test my blood sugar at least 4 times per day, but I’ve never had an abnormal reading. Most of my readings are between 64 and 88, including after eating. I don’t take insulin.

Occasionally, when I cheat from the diabetes diet (e.g., eating fast food or large quantities of sugar) I will get readings that are normal but high for me (e.g., between 94 and 104).

If I get a “high for me” reading at a time of day in which I would ordinarily eat a snack, should I go ahead and eat the snack? On one hand, I think I should to be consistent and keep my body used to producing insulin at that time of the day. Also, my blood sugar tends to crash into the 60s within a couple of hours if I don’t eat after getting that high of a reading.

On the other hand, I’ve seen several people on here be told never to eat when their sugar levels are high. I don’t know if that logic applies only when the blood sugar readings are abnormally high, or if the logic should also apply to the situation I am describing.

Diabetes runs in the family. My mother, sister, gran, etc all have it. Randomly I did a blood check (the pinprick machine) one morning and I had 7.0 (very high before breakfast considering it should be between 4 and 6). So I had a slice of wholegrain toast and went from 9 to 3 without eating. Did another pinprick test and I got 11.2, I’m like “woah”. So I go to the doctor’s and they say “right, fasting blood glucose check”. I waited a few days, did the fasting blood test and controlled my sugar levels throughout the week by eating very healthily, counting carbs and taking cinnamon tablets to help lower blood sugar. Although still very slightly high they weren’t as bad – I was waking up with 4.5 and 2 hours after wholegrain I had 6.2. On Tuesday I received my results and I was absolutely fine – my average is 5.5 and the range was from 3.5 – 6. Thinking that I was back to normal I went to university and had lasagne and lots of coffee. I got back just now (3 hours after eating), washed my hands, did a pinprick test and I got 16.2… in a few words, what on earth is going on? Are my results wrong?

My 4 yr. old daughter has normal fasting bg levels, but postprandial levels 1-2 hours after a meal often go as high as 280. She has had 5 readings over 200 in the past 4 days. Her bg numbers usually return to normal within 3-4 hours however. Is this indicative of diabetes?

I am diabetic for the past 3 years and South Indian aged 37. My Fasting Blood Sugar in Morning is always in the range of 150 – 200. But the Random Sugar level in evening drops down to the range of 100 – 150 with out any medication when tested 6 hrs after a normal south Indian Lunch and sugarless Tea in between. I check the sugar levels at Lab weekly once. My daily diet is Light breakfast, Normal Rice Lunch and Dinner with Chappathi avoiding Sweet items.
Is it normal to have high Sugar level in Morning?Please advise.

My husband monitors his glucose and on a whim I tested my 8 yr old daughter’s when she had poked her finger and it bled. She tested at a 488. I tested it an hour later and she was a 142. Is it normal for kids to have such high levels? Is this something that is an immediate concern, or something to make an appointment and get on the Dr’s schedule for 2 weeks from now?
