He had been advised to consume a nutritional supplement (Ensure) three times a day, but after a day or two of poor oral intake his serum glucose level was 1,400 mg/dL and his glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) was 8%. How should these findings be interpreted? Does the patient have recent-onset diabetes mellitus?
