She’s insulin resistant, more than likely. She makes insulin (unless she’s very thin/underweight), but her body doesn’t use it well. If she’s overweight, she will need to lose weight, more than likely. If she’s at a normal weight, she may simply need to eat more protein and less carbohydrate for her meals, as protein breaks down slower and releases glucose more gradually. If she IS overweight, she should contact her doctor, or an endocrinologist. She may be put on oral medication that will help her use her natural insulin better, insulin injections, or a combination, depending on what the doctor finds after a controlled glucose tolerance test.
Good luck to you both.
Sorry no… that’s not normal. Non-diabetics will spike after a meal, but wouldn’t ever get that high as far as I know. The highest blood sugar I’ve heard of in a non-diabetic is 180 (10mmol) and even that result seems to show a troubled pancreas. 2 hours after a meal a person should be back under 120 and dropping lower.
97 is an ok fasting number. Lower would be better, but fasting numbers are often a little higher because the liver encourages a burst of glucose to help us get started for the day.
317 after a meal is way too much though… time to see a doctor.
One thing to watch though – did she have clean hands before that post-meal test? If there was anything on her fingers it could have a big effect on the results, especially if it was a sweet drink or something.
That must have been quite a meal.
Seriously, it should not go over 140. She needs to get on a diabetic diet and exercise plan ASAP.
There’s a very nice explanation of impaired glucose tolerance (insulin resistance) on this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glucose_tolerance_test
When doing post prandial (after meal) testing make sure hands are washed and lotions or creams are not used yet. Lotions and creams can have a disasterous effect on numbers!! Also do not use alcohol pads to cleanse fingers or allow the alcohol to dry thoroughly.
No, 317 is not normal for 2 hours after a meal. The 97 is a good normal fasting number.
Most of us get to the Golden Years fairly healthy. Then everything goes to H*** in a handbasket!! Your mother is in that catagory! She needs to get a complete physical including blood work. The HbA1c test result is the percentage of glucose clinging to red blood cells and is an average of the last 90 days.
Good luck to you and your mother. Cherish her!
